The Weekender, das Magazin für Einblicke und Ausflüge

The Weekender 08

I like magazines. Well, I guess I should say “I like reading magazines”. Or what’s more, I like reading them, studying their design, noticing their typography, touching their paper, staring at all their pictures, and memorizing all this things in order to use them as a reference in future projects.

The first magazine I bought here in Berlin was “The Weekender”. I couldn’t help it. We first saw it in a shop (the Süper Store, in Kreuzberg). They had it because there was an article about them and they were quiet proud about that. Anyway, I was highly impressed and just a few days later I got it.

As it turns out, “The Weekender” is from Köln, not Berlin. Apparently, its first edition was published on April 13th and since then they’ve launched two more numbers. This is the third one. It’s a captivating 100-pages magazine, printed full colour in matt paper. It’s one of those tasteful mags that shows cool unknown people, cool unknown shops and more cool unknown stuff. But actually it really caught my eye because of its impeccable design, delicately curated by Christian Schneider. At first sight, you can feel that it’s very clear and simple, and that’s what makes it so likeable. As you can see below, everything breathes. There are plenty of photographs and some adorable illustrations too. The typography they use is a Bodoni, a choice that still defines more its character. Naturally, with all these pros, there had to be at least one unpleasant con… It costs 8 euros, which might seem quite a lot for a magazine, but maybe not that much for a 3-month one. On balance, it’s somehow reasonable.

To sum up, we highly recommend it to those who are keenly interested in design, photography and arts. For more information you can check their website www.the-weekender.com.
