Berlin and its Flohmarkts: Nowkoelln Flowmarkt

14

Berlin is full of Flohmärkte (flea markets). We have already talked about this in our post of Berlin and its Flohmarkts. Last weekend we discovered a new one: Nowkoelln Flowmarkt.

As many other outdoor activities in Berlin, this flea market begins with the spring and the good weather. This year it started on the 1st April, and it takes place every first and third Sunday of the month.

As its name says, it is located in Neukölln. Actually in the border with Kreuzberg, in the so-called Kreuzkölln. This neighbourhood located in the southeastern part of the city is more and more an emergent area among the berliners. It has been originally a working class and immigrant district, but its becoming and area full of students, hipsters, designers and artists looking for a cheap flat. So it is definitely a good idea to explore this area thorough its new and lovely cafes, galleries, bars…

But let’s stick back to the market. This flea market differs a lot from the ones that we have visited before. Though it was packed, it is not crowded of tourists as it is usually the Mauerpark. And even though some of the stalls you can also find them there, this one is more specialised into second-hand clothes and accessories. Most of the sellers are designers or shop owners that live in the area and they are really into fashion and vintage. You can see this from their wares, way much better than in any other market. What’s more, you can find vinyls, books, art, and handmade articles too, as well as some places to eat homemade food.

The atmosphere was great too, so warm and vibrant! And the live music and the situation close to the canal made it even better. Let’s hope though that the next edition the weather will be warmer, it was a quite cold and cloudy day. Anyway we won’t miss it for sure!

  1. Just missed out on this one. Went to Berlin mid-March during glorious spell of weather and visited the fleamarket in Mauer Park and found some great things: war-time postcards and id card. My boyfriend found them he’s written a post here: http://thebaronblog.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/artefacts-from-berlins-dark-past-part-3/

  3. Glad you liked it! Like your picture of the Neil Young record, he was contractually tied by his record company to release some more albums, so he made some really crap ones on purpose.
