Delightful places in West London
I live really close to Notting Hill and Portobello, and one of my favourite things to do on a sunny day is wonder around the cute parks and gardens, get lost in the streets with their magnificent Victorian houses and have one of the best italian Ice-creams I’ve tasted in London.
Holland Park is like an oasis in the middle of the city. It’s not as big as Hyde Park or Hampstead Heath, but it still has some great patches of grass to have a picnic and little treasures around every corner: a Japanesse Garden complete with a a waterfall and a pond full of Goldfish, a rose garden, a huge chessboard with human-size pieces… It’s perfect to stay all day sunbathing or just to chill for a bit after work. There’s also a restaurant with an amazing terrace, the Belvedere in Holland Park, but it’s quite pricey…
If you want to have a proper italian Ice-cream, then you have to go to Portobello Road and visit DriDri. Don’t be fooled by the modern decoration, their ice-creams are made in the traditional way: they are completely natural (they avoid using emulsifiers and non-natural thickeners) and full of flavour! They only use seasonal ingredients, so the offer is limited, but they taste delicious! The Stacciatella is just amazing and now I’m dying to try their seasonal flavours: raspberry and strawberry sorbet. They have three shops in London, but I usually go to the one in Notting Hill, located on 189 Portobello Road.
And just next door from the gelateria there’s one of the most amazing cinemas in London. I still haven’t been there but it’s definitely on my bucket list. Electric Cinema is no ordinary cinema (and the prices are not ordinary either), so be prepared to enjoy a whole different experience. Its original and luxurious interiors remind you of antique cinemas with leather seats, footstolls and tables for food and drink. It has a proper bar, so you can enjoy a glass of red wine while watching one of the films from their broad programme range (from mainstream blockbusters to independent projects). At the rear of the theatre there are also two 2-seater sofas available for a really romantic date.
