Open-air-cinemas in Barcelona
One of the pleasures of the summer is to spend time outdoors enjoying the good weather, and that’s even better when you combine it with a film session. Many cities offer open-air-cinema programs during the months of summer. During my visit to my city, Barcelona, I couldn’t help going to see a movie in the beautiful castle of Montjuïc, where every year Sala Montjuïc organises an open-air-cinema.
It’s been already 10 years that they place a big screen in this hill located in the southwest of the city. So not only you are surrounded by nature, but also with wonderful views of the city of Barcelona. This year they have programmed movies three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) from the 29th of July until the 8th of August, and it seems to be quite popular, at least the day I was there it was really crowded! The movies they are showing also explain a lot its popularity, such us The King’s Speech, También la Lluvia (Even the Rain), Inception… Always with a concert and a short movie first. You can bring your own blanket or chair, and if not, you have the possibility to just rent it there too. It’s also a good plan for a picnic, whether you bring food from home or you just grab something to eat in some of the food stands they offer.
From this summer though, Sala Montjuïc it’s not the only outdoor screen in Barcelona. Cinema Lliure a la Platja, from the 26th of July until the 30th of August, is placing also a big screen on the beach, Platja de Sant Sebastià. So instead of views of the city you have views of the see, which is pretty awesome too! This project is very distinct from the Sala Montjuïc though, with a more independent movie program and without having to pay for an entrance. Yes, it’s completely free!
Unfortunately I am back in Berlin at the moment so I won’t be able to enjoy this film sessions on the beach. However, Berlin offers too many outdoors cinema possibilities in their numerous Freiluftkinos!

Wow, this looks amazing! We have our own little humble movie night at the park in San Francisco (which is quite nice), but as an American I can’t quite wrap my head around having a movie night in a castle!
